The town of Ellensburg was founded in 1849 by Captain John Rodgers and his family after they abandoned Fort Vancouver on the Columbia River for what became Thurston County. In 1907, the Ellensburg Railroad was built to transport goods from Tacoma to Ellensburg. In 1925, the town decided to become its own municipality and changed its name to Ellensburg. The first mayor of Ellensburg was W. H.Crowley; he served until 1935 when he was succeeded by J.D.(John D.) Stephens who served until 1951 when he was succeeded by Gail Aiken who served until 1974 when she resigned because she married John Davenport, an American senator from Washington State

"As Congress became more polarized along party lines during Reconstruction following the Civil War (1861-1865), businesses closed their doors and men found themselves outmaneuvered by women," said historian Debora Lasky-Werner. In 1865, Washington passed a law granting voting rights to women which sparked a wave of female entrepreneurs who set up businesses throughout the state. At first they sold products such as eggs and flour from their homes but soon started manufacturing items such as dresses and hats that were not common on American soil at that time. During World War II (1939-1945),Ellensburg served as a military training ground for troops from all over North America. This included soldiers from Japan who commuted through town on their way back home after fighting there during World War II. As war ended, many Soldiers left town looking for civilian employment but few returned home because so much had changed since they last saw each other: technology had advanced considerably since then! In 1951, King County merged into Washington State following newly created county boundaries. Since then, Ellensburg has seen steady growth with new construction being done on both commercial and residential blocks throughout its growing downtown district which sits atop high mountains providing stunning views across Puget Sound toward Seattleites across Elliott Bay.. census data released earlier this year shows that Ellensburg's population has increased by 12% between 2010 and 2016 alone!
The town of Ellensburg was founded in 1792 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Missouri River, and in 1853 it became a city. The city was renamed after General George Washington in 1881.
