Ellensburg is a small town in Washington County, Oregon, United States. It is located at the confluence of the Columbia River andSnake River and was founded by fur traders in 1853. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit what is now Ellensburg was Captain James Cook on his ill-fated voyage to Polynesia in 1778. Cook's men collected artifacts here including globe, mirror, pottery and spearheads before continuing their journey. The area had been visited by Native Americans before this time but it wasn't until 1853 that white people arrived in what is now Ellensburg to prospect for gold and silver. In 1859, Fort Stevens was built here as part of Umpqua Indian War efforts against the US government. In 1862, during the American Civil War, Union General Ulysses S Grant set up camp near present day Ellensburg while he fought his way northward from Oregon across the Rocky Mountains. Here he met Confederate General Robert Ewell whose forces were blockading Union supplies entering Oregon from Missouri via Camp Douglas on the lower Snake River Valley.Ewell decided to cross the river rather than fight through enemy lines which would have required months of travel over difficult terrain and high rivers; instead he ordered his troops to encamp along Snake River's then virgin banks where they remained for three days without food or water before being forced back across by advancing Union troops under Lieutenant Colonel Charles Sumner on October 12th 1862.. On November 5th 1862General Grant ordered all troops south of Fort Stevens (now known as Mount Adams) march eastward towards Portland so that they could be moved into position closer to Richmond after the Battle of Fredericksburg; however this order failed to reach General Grant's headquarters due to a communication failure between army command posts.. Consequently General Grant withdrew his forces northwards towards Hoodsboro undecisively leading to one of history's most spectacular strategic blunders.. In 1865 President Andrew Johnson sent Major General Alfred Terry with two armies into Northwest Montana Territory searching for Gold Rush miners who had discovered rich seams of gold near Butte Creek Road Bridge about 25 miles northeast of today's Nampa, Idaho; however upon reaching Butte Creek Road Bridge Terry learned that no mines existed there either and pulled his units back soon afterward when informed by local ranchers about large herds of bison grazing on private land just outside their boundaries.. All told these events led directly to what is now called Bismarck County being created out west from parts unknown when Arizona became a state in 1912.. In 1923 an oil well named Hells Canyon hydraulic fracturing operation operated here resulted in massive earthquakes measuring 6 kilometers (3 miles) deep and lasting more than 72 hours that struck areas around downtown Ellensburg as far away as Seattle; killing at least 33 people EPA records show eight homes sustained minor damage or total loss with four families losing all their belongings plus many personal items such as furniture and artwork.) When World War II began vast amounts of munitions were stockpiled locally including truckloads of chemical weapons stored at what is now Pumice Point Naval Shipyard adjacent thereto during World War II... nearby beaches were used extensively by both RAF bombers equipped with dummy planes filled with explosives designed not onlyto cause explosions but also fires which caused great losses among shipyards workers.;during 1943-1945 an estimated 60%of local crop production went unused because farmers could not get accessto credit or marketable crops .. At its height naval base employed over 4500 personnel who produced goods totaling $38 million dollars After WWIIEllensberg fell behind schedule economically although it boasted some very fine institutions such as University College & School Of Medicine&Dentistry etc.,and EnvisioningANewCentury will document how much has changed since then ranging fromTransportation systems like Uber & Lyft etc.,to real estate having exploded such that single family homes are becoming increasingly rarer while luxury rentals continue grow apace,) Elkinsburgh residents are fiercely proud locals who maintain close ties wit h neighbouring towns throughout southeastern Washington State even if they do feel “isolated” geographically speaking within Washinton County which surrounds them ..
