Ellensburg is a small town in Thurston County, Washington, United States. The population was 2,022 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The village of Ellensburg was founded in 1881 by farmers who decided to set up a community on the east bank of the Spokane River because they believed that it would be easier to get goods and services from Seattle than from other nearby villages. In 1907, the town's first post office opened and it remained in operation until 1957. The town got its name from General James K. Polk's visit to Ellensburg on September 11, 1881. General Polk met with local leaders here and recommended that the name be given to what would become one of Washington's most important cities--Washington City Roamers had proposed "Ella" for the new city but were turned down because they did not believe that it would be popular with residents or businesses. A committee chaired by Mayor Prentice Hoadley chose "Ellensburg" after hearing about a group of soldiers who had stopped at an inn nearby for dinner on their way back from fighting in Mexico during Late July 1881 – this story has been passed down as one reason why people in Ellensburg began calling themselves "Riders." In 1907, when First National Bank was built downtown and made possible by Congressman George Sutherland’s donation of $10,000 (equivalent to $ million today), development started anew around downtown and along State Street between Union Station and Superior Heights Cemetery which became known as “The Strip” due to its commercial character at that time. At first only single-family homes were built; however over time more apartments, shops etc., sprang up throughout downtown areas becoming known as “The Bays” which still exist today within walking distance of each other on Third Avenue North between Union Station Road/Alki Beach Drive & State Street /Downtown Mall Area In 1928 school consolidation moved into full swing with three high schools (Cascade High School #1 across State street from Union Station Road/Alki Beach Dr., Pierce High School #2 next door across Alki Beach Drive & Whitman High School #3 across Third Avenue North) all located within blocks of each other in what is now Downtown Mall . This resulted in much loss or demolition of residences along East State Street between Union Station Road/Alki Beach Drive & Superior Heights Cemetery including many well-known old houses such as Mrs John Fritz house located just east side 3rd Ave N & Superior Heights Cir where Mrs Fritz herself entertained President Franklin D Roosevelt when he came through Thurston County during his 1944 tour Monsanto Electric Cooperative building located at corner 3rd Ave N Superior Heights Cir - demolished 1962 All Stated On October 26th 1947 voters approved a proposition authorising construction I-5 Spanning rural Thurston Countywidening I-5 heading northeast towards Cheney via Snoqualmie Pass then south past Wenatchee River then east past Ellensburg thence north again thru Cougar Butte crossing Stevens Pass enroute ending near Olympia
