However, over time the idea for restoring Fort Ellensburg came about and on October 1st 1865, President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order No. 9 “ orders ordering all work connected with fortification at or near presente[d] points within this State to be discontinued until further orders” (Ferguson). This order restored many of FortEllensburgh's destroyed buildings including the powder magazine which had been knocked down by the war effort earlier that year. After years of planning and construction, renovation began on FortEllenburgh in 1971 and finished only two years later! The fort is now open to visitors who can enjoy its historical significance as well as its beautiful architecture!
The first permanent settlers in the area were the Shoshone, who arrived in 1810. They were followed by the Wenatchee tribe in 1812 and the Alaskan Malamute people in 1814. The land around Ellensburg was first developed as a hunting ground by local Native Americans. A school was established here in 1819, and a post office was founded in 1827. The town of Ellensburg began to grow rapidly after it was incorporated as a borough in 1912. In 1916, it became an incorporated city. In February 1960, it adopted its current name of Ellensburg based on its location at the confluence of two rivers.
