In the early 1800s, Ellensburg, Washington was a small town that relied on its local farmers for their products. Because of this, the town had access to a wide variety of goods and services. One of these services was binoculars. Binoculars were used by farmers to see far away objects and also by soldiers during battle. In 1892, a man named John Fenton began manufacturing binoculars in Ellensburg. From then on, binocular production increased in all of Washington State. By 1925, there were over 100 binocular companies in Washington State alone! Today,binoculars are still used extensively throughout Washington State and the United States.

The first people to live in Ellensburg were the Hohokam. They built a town around 8,000 years ago and left behind evidence of their existence. The next occupants were the Nacimis, who arrived in the area about 1100 AD. The Nacimis were a Native American tribe that lived near present-day Ellensburg. When white settlers began arriving in the area in 1853, they also discovered the Nacimis’ remains and started calling the area Ellensburg after them. The first permanent settler in Ellensburg was George Goodyear, who arrived in 1855. He erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Goodyearville after himself.
Ellensburg is a town in Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,868 at the 2010 census. The Ellensburg Arsenal is an infantry battalion training center and home of the 7th Infantry Regiment. The first permanent settler in what would become Yakima County was George Naylor in 1815. He named his land "Natchez." A post office was established in 1820 and became known as "Natchez". In 1826, the area around Ellensburg became part of Spokane County when it was organized from parts of Yakima and Tacoma counties. In 1840, Jno. Fenton laid out a town site on public land called North Bend which he named after his father-in-law's house on the old Naylor farm north of present day downtown Ellensburg. By 1850, there were over 100 citizens living within a mile of North Bend. The first school was built in North Bend in 1851 and classes began in September that same year. A post office called "Everett" was established at Everett Landing on Puget Sound by order of President James Kapp during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). After several names changes including "Bellevue," "North Bend," and finally "Ellensburg," it arrived at its current name on January 6, 1861 with the arrival of mail from Seattle via ship anchored off Mount Rainier National Park across Elliott Bay to Olympia Cityshore Boardwalk

The town of Ellensburg was founded in 1847 by Colonel George Washington Custer and his wife, Miss Missouri Kelley. The town grew rapidly due to the wagon trade and agriculture. In 1861, the Union Army captured Ellensburg during the Civil War and the town was destroyed.
