Ellensburg, Washington is a small town in central Washington State. It was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition in 1804 as a stop on their journey from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. The population of Ellensburg peaked at 9,500 in 1910, but has since declined by about 50%. Today, there are only a few hundred residents living within the city limits. The first settlement in what is now Ellensburg was organized on February 10, 1804 by Capt. James Kapp and Dr. George Vancouver when they explored the area between Walla Walla and Lake Easedale. The town's name comes from Chief Yakima's word "elee." The first school was built in 1805-06 and served as the primary source of education for children living within the city limits until annexation of neighboring Whitman County in 1907 made it an independent municipality. In 1830, part of what is now Olympia was purchased from John McLoughlin for $5,000 cash and land grants totaling 142 acres (63 km2). This purchase included all of present-day Olympia except for what is now downtown which remained under McLoughlin's ownership until he sold it to Seattle entrepreneur David Douglas in 1853 for $10,000 more than he had paid for it two years earlier. On December 12th, 1854, Douglas established his permanent home at Olympia while encamped near today's Cascade Mall. From this location he began construction on what would become his most famous project: The Queen Anne Hotel which opened its doors to guests on September 17th, 1860. In 1870s and 1880s much development took place around Prime Street including building of new homes east of Main Avenue (now University Boulevard) followed by establishment of businesses such as grocery stores and lumberyards along that thoroughfare during that time period also known as Commercial Row or Downtown District.) As late as 1923 there were still buildings remaining along First Avenue northwest of University Boulevard which served as commercial districts throughout most of Tacoma before streetcar service arrived comprehensive with stops at university avenue intersection starting circa 1905 making travel to downtown much easier without having to go down main street
The town of Ellensburg was founded in 1854 by John A. Ellens and his wife Catharine. The town became a census-designated place in 1954 and was U.S. Route 11th Avenue through the early 1960s, then US 10th Avenue from the late 1960s until it was redesignated as I-90 in 1999.
