It is bordered by the Olympic Peninsula to the north, Snohomish County to the east, Thurston County to the south and King County to the west. Edmonds was founded in 1875 as an agricultural community on Puget Sound's eastern shore. In 1886 it became part of what would become Kitsap County. The town's first store was built on Main Street in 1896 and its first mayor was H.L. Ricketts Sr., who also served as county treasurer from 1904-1906 and 1910- 1912. In 1922, Edmonds became an incorporated municipality and adopted a charter that allowed for more commerical development within its limits; this led to increased economic activity which has helped keep Edmonds vibrant over time. It is bordered by Padden County to the north and east, Douglas County to the south and west, and Snohomish County to the northwest. The Post Office has been in operation since 1851. The first people who lived in Edmonds were Native American Athabascan-speaking tribesmen from what is now central Canada. They arrived during Evidence Point Trading Expedition in 1792 and founded a village on land that later became part of Edmonds. In 1847, Edmonds was platted as a town by three brothers: George Haughton (1812-1889), John Haughton (1815-1893) and Augustus Ewing (1819-1896). The town was named after Reverend Samuel Morse, an American missionary who established religious services in Seattle in 1851. Edmonds enjoyed some economic growth during World War II due to its proximity to Naval Base Kitsap–Wacoma; however, it lost most of its businesses when the base closed down in 1945. The population increased slowly until 2000 when it reached 2,052 residents according to the 2010 census estimate. There are few permanent residents because much of their work takes place within walking distance of various stores or restaurants located throughout downtown Edmonds or along Interstate 5 just outside of town limits. The main industry now that employs many locals is tourism which accounts for about 60% of all employment within downtown Edmonds or along I-5 outside of town limits. There are also several small businesses maintaining local character such as antique shops and gas stations which have seen recent increases in traffic due to tourists coming through town for events like Seahawks football games or concerts at nearby Everett Stadium
