In 1951, Edmond's first grocery store opened its doors and soon became known as one of the leading providers of groceries in the region. Today, Edmonds has more than 20 locally owned businesses including several small grocery stores that are family-owned and operated for generations. By 1900, most of Edmonds had been abandoned due to out-migration from the area; only a few farmsteads remained until after World War II when new residents began moving into the town to take advantage of its many opportunities for education and work. Edmonds has seen some interesting changes over its history: In 1916 it became one of five towns in King County to become a city; it lost that status when neighboring Bellevue became a city; and it regained that status when Bellevue merged with Redmond on November 3, 1998. Today, Edmonds remains an active community with rich cultural heritage dating back to its earliest days: Its richly embroidered fabric industry continues to be enjoyed by locals and tourists alike; its wide variety of shops and businesses offers something for everyone; its large athletic field hosts many events throughout the year; and its vibrant downtown district retains much of its character from years past.
