Edmonds was founded in 1884 as a small settlement on the eastern edge of what is now Tacoma and first known as Yelm Creek Settlement. In 1907, it became an incorporated town with a population of 1,500 people. In 1951, Edmonds joined King County and the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The Town Hall is located in downtown Edmonds and has been used for various functions including meetings of the town council and community development committee since 1903. The building served as both a jail from 1889 to 1901 and then as a post office until 1959. In 1911, residents voted to rename their town after George Edmunds (1795-1871), an American politician who served twice as Governor of Washington Territory (1855-60). At that time, Edmunds was one of only two U.S. Senators from Washington Territory (the other being John Sherman). His death at age 54 created much controversy because he had not yet reached full adulthood when he died; many people claimed he should have been given more credit for his successes while still alive! The name change eventually came about due to local objections to continuing to be called "Yelm Creek Settlement" after such an eminent figure had already passed away! Edmonds also played host to numerous events during World War II including military encampments which housed troops stationed here before they departed for battle overseas; dances at the high school which featured military talent from nearby Tacoma; civicpicnics where locals could bring food and drinks for free; and even a few air raids!
Edmonds was founded in 1851 by a group of men from Tacoma. The town became a railroad junction and grew rapidly because of its position as the center of the Puget Sound region. In 1909, Edmonds merged with nearby Lake Union to form the City of Seattle.
