Edmonds, Washington is a city in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 592 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle metropolitan area. The name "Edmonds" comes from the Skagit River which runs through its center and leaves Edmonds Creek on the east side to flow into Lake Mead. The site of what is now Edmonds was first inhabited by small villages near where Puget Sound met Lake Washington. In 1853, when gold miners began arriving in search of silver and other minerals in this region, they named the settlement "Edmond" after Edwin A. Edwards (born 1793), an American general who had fought for independence against Great Britain during the Mexican-American War. After gold were found at nearby Mount Baker in 1857, settlers began to arrive here from all over King County and even from as far away as Tacoma. By 1870, there were over 100 people living in Edmonds proper including many farmers and their families who had taken up land along Cherry Creek east of town on what is now North First Street. In 1880, when lumbermen arrived to build new homes on hills overlooking town, they also started building a sawmill on Cherry Creek which still stands today. In 1929, when Seattle's then-new public school district was created out of parts of several local townships including Edmonds Township (later renamed Southworth), some residents of Edmonds helped to lay out Southworth Park southeast of town; it remains one of Seattle's most popular recreation areas today. After World War II ended with the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, many educated Japanese Americans moved into districts adjoining Seattle such as Pioneer Square and Ballard while others settled around Fairview Heights outside downtownSeattle; these neighbourhoods are still known collectively as Eastlake or Japanesetown today thanks to their proximity to both universities and other heavy industry during those years).
