This made it possible for people all over Europe and Asia to read religious texts and learn about new technologies. Edmonds, Washington is located in the Puget Sound region of Western Washington and is bordered by Thurston County to the east, King County to the north, and Snohomish County to the west. The population was 8,060 at the 2000 census. The first Europeans to visit Edmonds were members of Captain John Stevens' Expedition in 1792-93. The first permanent settler in Edmonds was James Fenton who arrived in 1824. He built a log cabin on land he had bought from Indians. Fenton's cabin was destroyed by fire in 1827 but his son-in-law, John Purdy rebuilt it and named it "Fenton's Cabin." In 1829 Samuel Lynde purchased 2 acres (0.8 km²) of property south of present day Fourth Street and built a small cabin which he called "Lynde's House." In 1831 Alexander McKay purchased 0.5 acre (0.2 km²) of land north of present day Fourth Street from Lynde and set about building a house which is now known as "Mackay's House." In 1830 James Caldwell came into possession of 1/4 acre (0.16 km²) of land northwest of present day Third Street which he named "Caldwell's Prairie". In 1832 George Wright moved from Seattle to take up permanent residence at what is now Third Avenue South and began cultivation of some 300 acres (120 ha)of farmlands that became known as Wright's Prairie.. In 1833 Elisha Denny bought 5 acres (2 ha) northeast of Third Avenue South from Wright for $100 dollars..Denny renamed his purchase "Denny's Farm" .. . In 1840 Wm Murtagh acquired 4 acres (1 ha) southeast corner First Street between Second and Third Avenues for $10 dollars ..Murtagh name this parcel "Murtagh’s Land" .. . On December 22, 1850 Wm Murtagh sold his tract including part or all along First street east side below Dearborn Avenue for $60 dollars ..This lot contains much valuable reasoning lumber .... After years during which time many lots changed hands among various owners there still remains an excellent equal mix composed mostly Cascades Fir with Robes Pine trees on large areas
Edmonds was founded in 1853 by Ezra Edmonds and his wife, Emma. The town was named after the nearby Mount Rainier National Park. In 1876, the railroad arrived and started providing goods and passengers to the town. The first post office was established in 1877. The population of Edmonds grew rapidly during this time with many new businesses opening up. In 1889, a school was built and the community continued to grow. In 1912, a library was opened and the town exploded in popularity with people coming to read books and learn about their surroundings. By 1928, when it peaked as a small village, Edmonds had over 1,000 residents. However, during World War II, many of its residents served in the military or were drafted into service. This put a halt to growth for a few years but by 1946 there were still over 1,000 people living in Edmonds. During the late 1940s through early 1960s however, growth slowed as many of the businesses closed down or moved out of state because of economic conditions. However, due to restarting education programs which brought more people back into town during this time period; Edmonds rebounded quickly from its lack of growth during those years The current population is around 940 people
