Edmonds is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,910 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area. The first residents of Edmonds were Native Americans who lived on the east side of Puget Sound. In 1851, George A. Edmondson established a small trading post on land owned by his father-in-law, John Covington. In 1907, when Microsoft founder Paul Allen bought all of the land that now includes Edmonds and most of neighboring Lakewood Hills, he named it Microsoft Park full stop. Edmonds had its start as a logging community in 1903 when Jock Finlayson founded the Finlayson Lumber Company at what is now First Avenue and South Street. The company built mills and sawmills around town until World War II when production shifted to Boeing Plant 1 on Elliott Bay near downtown Seattle. After Boeing closed in 1979, lumber production slowly tapered off until 1990 when two new timber companies merged to form Northwest Lumber: Northern Timbers and Pacific Lumber Co., which bought much older trees from Finlayson’s successor company Interbay Lumber Co.. In recent years, Edmonds has become an important commercial center for agriculture with Amazon Prime Now located just down First Avenue from the town hall and several large family farms dotting the landscape; some have been there since before King County was formed in 1912! Today’s economy depends heavily on transportation: both Amtrak (Seattle) and Sound Transit have stations within walking distance of many homes or businesses in downtown Edmonds and many other parts of Tacoma; buses run frequently between downtown Tacoma (5 minutes away) and various neighborhoods outside of town; trucks drive into town only during special events or for processing woodchuck eggs!
