Edmonds, Washington is home to one of the most diverse arsenals in the state. The city was founded in 1853 by Enoch Smith, a fur trader and member of the first Territorial Legislature. His nephew, Cyrus K. Kelso, established a mill here in 1857 that became the largest flour mill in Puget Sound. In 1902, Edmonds joined forces with other towns in King County to form the Seattle-Bellevue-Edmonds Combined Statistical Area (CSA). This area included all of King County as well as Bellevue and Edmonds on Puget Sound. In 1948, Edmonds annexed what is now Tacoma and ceased being an CSA member. In 1934, Harry Earle Barnes opened his first hardware store in downtown Edmonds; this store would continue to operate until it closed in 1978. In 1951, Carl Lagerfeld opened his first clothing store in Edmonds; this store would continue to operate until it closed in 1988. In 1955, Poul Anderson organized a group of farmers who purchased 1 acre (0·8 km²) northeast of present day Edmondso called "The Gables". This group became known as The Old West Foundation and began developing new land around their farmsteads including land that now contains much of downtown Edmondsonline Shopping Mall In 1957, Wm Daugherty opened his first conveniencestore in DowntownEdmondsonlineShopping Mall which he renamed "Daugherty's". This business would continue to operate until it closed in 1996 On July 17th 1959 donations were received from Mrs Edward Fenton ($10) towards purchasing an addition to the current elementary school building which later became known as East High School . On October 15th 1960 construction began on what became known as North High School ; this building continued operating until 1975 In 1962 Pouls Anderson formed a second group or individuals who pooled their resources together $2 dollars towards erecting a sign reading "Empire Hardware" at corner Main & Spruce Streets . On October 12th 1966 they donated 10$ towards purchasing an addition to their existing garage which also became known as Empire Hardware . On January 25th 1970 they donated 20$. toward purchasing two additional buildings - one for classrooms (later named East High School Annex) and one for office space (later renamed Northwest High School Annex). The first store was built on a lot donated by the Edmonds family. In 1898, the town had its first post office and began to grow rapidly. In 1912, the United States Post Office moved from Seattle to Edmonds and continued to grow in population. In 1943, when World War II began, Edmonds became an important military base with over 100 soldiers stationed there. After the war ended, the military left and Edmonds slowly grew back into its original form as a small community. In 1978, residents approved Proposition 1 which called for annexation of neighboring Unalaska Borough. This led to rapid growth in both communities as people from Unalaska started moving into Edmonds and vice versa. Today, Edmonds is home to over 50 businesses including several major retailers such as Sears and Kijiji.
