East Wenatchee is a census-designated place in Chelan County, Washington, United States. The population was 998 at the 2010 census. East Wenatchee was founded in 1887 by farmers from eastern Oregon and western Washington who came to this area to purchase land for irrigation purposes. The town of East Wenatchee grew up around the railroad station and agricultural vegetable market that were built there. In 1916, the Eastern Pacific Railroad donated land to the town for a shopping center and school district was formed out of the donation. In 1949, East Wenatchee voters passed a resolution calling for its incorporation as a city. On December 2, 1950, East Wenatchee became an incorporated city with its own government andpolice department. The population continued to grow steadily until it reached 1,500 in 1970; however, since then it has been declining gradually due to various factors including subdivision development and loss of jobs in the primary agricultural industry which have led to decline in population density and home values. The decline in population density has also led to increased competition for limited housing resources between residents of neighboring towns and villages which have resulted in some displacement of residents (although this has generally been minimal). One reason why growth rates have slowed over time is because new transportation options such as highway access or Interstate 5 have penetrated into the community making it difficult for people living close by to send their children to schools inside of cities or take advantage of commuter services available outside of cities. However, other initiatives such as village board meetings having more impact on community life are beginning to revive activity within East Wenatchee which may lead to renewed growth potential over time
The town of Wenatchee was founded in 1855 by Danish immigrants. The first post office was established in Wenatchee in 1861. In 1872, the county seat of Chelan County was moved to Wenatchee from Jenks and the town became the county's second capital. The county courthouse and jail were built in 1888 and 1912, respectively. The centennial of the incorporation of Wenatchee as a village occurred in 1968.
