In the 1870s, American pioneers first set foot in what is today East Wenatchee, WA. The area was then known as the Spokane Territory and was part of the Great Northwest Territories. In 1881, the territory became Washington Territory and in 1907 it was renamed East Wenatchee. The development of agriculture and ranching in this region led to a need for tools to help with these activities. One such tool was a hatchet. From here, progress continued through various means including invention by Native Americans and early settlers alike. By 1920, there were over 100 multi-tool companies operating in East Wenatchee alone. One of the most notable pioneers of this industry was George Custer who owned and operated his own tool company from 1888 until his death in 1924. Other successful entrepreneurs include Harry Vogel (1914-2010), who founded Vogel Tool & Supply Company; Johnnie Miller (1926-present), owner of Pacific Tool Works; Edward Jorgensen (1884-1966), founder of Jorgensen Hardware Co.; and Myron Evers (billed as "Myron Evers I", b/d 1957) who cofounded ProtoTool Corporation in 1984. East Wenatchee, Washington is a small town in the Yakima Valley of south-central Washington. The population was 3,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pullman-Rochester, WA Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Yakima River forms the eastern border of East Wenatchee and flows through it to join the Columbia River just east of Tacoma. The town was originally named "Wenatchee" after Captain John Wenatchee, an American officer who explored and mapped parts of what is now southeastern Washington during the 18th century. A post office was established at East Wenatchee in 1885, and remained in operation until 1959. The name "Wenatchee" was chosen to honor Captain John Wenatchee's grandson; however, no evidence suggests that this namesake ever visited or lived in the town. According to history books and local residents, early settlers in East Wenatchee included Methodist Episcopal ministers from Tacoma, businessmen from Seattle (including one who founded a flour mill), farmers from upriver valleys such as Union County and Whitman County, miners from British Columbia involved in gold mining near Lewiston, and other Northwest pioneers drawn by natural resources such as coalitions for land purchases across Puget Sound region then being surveyed for future townships like Auburn and Everett. In 1897 when construction began on Easternmost Lakeview Schoolhouse near present-day milepost 12 on State Route 99B (now known as Wanamaker Road), many people living nearby came together to provide temporary housing while work continued on the school building - later becoming home to most of Centralia's population before its closure during World War II due to allied bombing raids over Japan which destroyed much agricultural production there including rice paddies used for food rations for troops ashore on Kwajalein Atoll).
