This gave Bemis rights to all water courses draining into or entering Lake Wenatchee except Washburn Creek which he must share with neighboring townships Olmsted and Grays Harbor until 1923 when they were given their own titles by Secretary of Agriculture Wallace Stegner. At that time Lakeside Dam became operational providing power to East Wenatchee residents during prohibition; however this ceased operation when it was decommissioned in 1957 due to concerns about potential flooding caused by rain runoff from Seattle's Central District powerhouse plant upstream on Clearwater River valley). Following World War II, local farms were converted into housing developments such as Century City Park and Hillcrest Gardens; however most people continued to farm until 1974 when highly automated farming methods replaced traditional techniques which led to increased erosion on banks around lakes/towns alongributaries including those draining into Lake Wanachee and its tributaries resulting in loss of groundcover essential for aquatic life support (see: "Wenatchee Erosion controversy"). The Wenatchee River formed the northeast border of what is now Washington in 1853. The town of Wenatchee was founded on the bank of the river by Captain John Jacob Astor and his wife, Lillie, in 1855. The first store was built on Main Street in 1865.
