The first white men to visit what is now East Wenatchee, Washington, in the mid-19th century were members of a fur trading party led by Captain John McLoughlin. The town of East Wenatchee was founded on July 3, 1853, by McCloughlin and his crew of six white men and one Native American woman. The community rapidly grew due to its location near the new gold fields discovered in the region. In 1861, the United States acquired Alaska from Russia andEast Wenatchee became part of the new state. The town continued to grow until World War II when it was destroyed by a fire. Today, East Wenatchee is a sleepy small town with few residents but rich history.
