The history of gun sights in East Wenatchee, Washington goes back to at least 1868. At that time, a small post office existed on the corner of 9th Street and Center Avenue. The postmaster, James A. McClain, donated land to the town for a municipal park. In 1889, the town built its first school on this site. In 1912, East Wenatchee became an incorporated municipality. One of the first acts of the new municipality was to purchase land at 10th and Center for a public library. The present-day library building was completed in 1922 and is one of the most visible landmarks inEast Wenatchee. A number of churches have been built in and around East Wenatchee over the years, including one which still flourishes today – St John’s Episcopal Church located on Main Street. There are several parks and playgrounds located within or close to the town limits as well as several public libraries that serve this rural community well.
The first European to sight the area now known as Washington was Spanish navigator Juan de Fuca on July 8, 1592. He named the Strait of Juan de Fuca "the Gate of the Pacific" because it seemed impossible for a sailing vessel to enter from Asia without being stopped by shoals of kelp. The area now includes parts of both Oregon and Washington.
