East Wenatchee is a small town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east bank of the Wenatchee River. The first people to live in East Wenatchee were the Yakama and Northern Cheyenne. In 1821, Captain George Vancouver sailed down the river and found a place called "Wenatchee" (now East Wenatchee) by mistake while sailing through that area. He named it after his own home country of England. The first European settlers in East Wenatchee were white men from Illinois who came overland from Oregon in 1847-48. They built a cabin on bluffs overlooking the river and began to cultivate crops and raise sheep. In 1853, when gold was discovered near Waneta Creek, miners arrived in droves to find land for themselves along the river's banks. By 1860, there were three mining districts: North Wenatchee District No 3; Central District No 2; and South District No 1 which included most of present-day East Wenatchee Township including what is now part of Northport (northwest corner), Middleport (southwest corner), Southern Portsmouth (southeast corner), Shetland Heights (southwest corner), Weston Park (northwest corner) and parts of Southport (east side). In 1907, when Congress passed the Organic Act which established agriculture as a U.S. Departmental responsibility, an Eastern Washington Agricultural Experiment Station was established at East Wenatchee with $1 million from William Randolph Hearst's foundations to promote research on soil fertility, irrigation systems and other agricultural topics in that region only west of then existing Puget Sound countries such as Canada and Mexico City where agricultural sciences were still being developed with American assistance or education primarily provided by Europeans coming back from their travels across America during this time period followed by many Americans going off to farm themselves starting what would become known as open air farming beginning around 1910 with significant advances made possible through World War I brought about increased funding available for agronomy due to greater knowledge acquired during earlier wars including things like better yields achieved through selective breeding based on developments throughout Europe during that time period also keyed into why certain types of crops became more successful such as potatoes while others failed such as wheat because farmers had improved methods available during this time period thanks largely to advances made both domestically but also abroad especially Germany specifically due to its support given via Kaiser Wilhelm II’s New Empire Order program which sought To improve economic conditions across all German speaking regions within much like America’s Progressive Era had been doing since the Gilded Age days prior leading up directly into World War I
The East Wenatchee area was first settled by the Skagit people in the late 1700s. The early settlers were farmers and fishermen who hunted, fished, and gathered food from the local land. By 1855, there were about 20 families living in theEast Wenatchee area. In 1907, a post office was established at East Wenatchee. The town of East Wenatchee grew up around the post office and gradually began to develop as a commercial center for the surrounding countryside. In 1913, a dam was built on the Snake River to create water resources for local farmers. This development led to increased business activity in East Wenatchee and helped contribute to its rapid growth over time. In 1967, East Wenatchee became an incorporated town with full city status. Today, it remains an important agricultural center with a population of around 100 residents.
