This led to increased interest in the region by commercial interests who began issuing checks for lands in what is now Eastern Washington (the modern state of Washington). By 1824 there were over 100 companies vying for land grants in this area stretching from British Columbia down into present dayOregon and Idaho. By 1860, east Wenatchee had become one of the fastest growing areas in all of Washington due largely to goldmining activity around Goldsboro Bayou on Isabella County’s southeast side (now eastside annexed by Seattle). Gold Rush fever swept across North America during those years with prospectors streaming into every corner of California looking for veins or nuggets worth $1 per ounce or more found strewn throughoutundoubtedly Stimulated exploration followed by speculative investment resulted in an ever-growing number of Chinese immigrants coming northward seeking opportunity as well as skills needed for this new industry which attracted entrepreneurs such as George Stephenson who built first locomotives classified under “steamboats” but ran on water powered by oars – he called them pocket steamers – connecting various mines at various points along Goldsboro Bayou with local sawmills where lumber was being processed into boards for shipment downriver aboard flatboats known then as clippers(later steamships)
