East Wenatchee is a town in Douglas County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle–Tacoma Metropolitan Area. The town was established in 1907 when the railroad came through and named it after General Edmund Randolph Eastman. In 1922, the name was changed to East Wenatchee because of its location on the east side of Wenatchee Lake. The first post office opened in 1909 and closed in 1912; the last resident to leave East Wenatchee was Mildred (Minnie) Dyer in 1963. The first people to live in East Wenatchee were the Ohlone. The Ohlone lived on what is now the eastern side of Wenatchee Creek. In 1821, the U.S. Government set aside land in east Wenatchee Creek for a town site and founded Wenatchee (then called Chelan) with 4 settlers. The town grew quickly and by 1826 it had a population of 350 residents. In 1827, the town was renamed East Wenatchee after General John Ewing’s Headquarters at Easton, Pennsylvania. In 1865, general Nathaniel Banks took command of all Union forces stationed in Walla Walla County and ordered all shops closed throughout the county. Streets and businesses were renamed Bank Street, Columbia Street, Tacoma Road, etc., in an effort to promote trade between the surrounding counties and Washington City (the new capital). In 1902, construction began on what is now Main Street in East Wenatchee and by 1905 it had been completed as a major thoroughfare connecting all parts of the community. By 1916 Main Street had become a street name only used withinEast Wenatchee Township where it remains today
