The City Council decided to create a Police Soft Gun Case Committee to study the feasibility and advisability of soft shooting cases for departmental pistols. Brownell as its first firearms instructor and began using the Walther PPK pistol in his program. In 1966,Des Moines purchased an additional Walther PPK handgun for its police department. Des Moines is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 507 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Polk County. It was founded by Danish settlers in 1847 and named after Des Moines River. The first European settlement in what is now Polk County was by Danish colonists in 1847. They named their new town Des Moines after the Des Moines River, which they found south of their original land grant from the Swedish government. The river had been known to them since they were out prospecting for saltpeter near present-day Cedar Rapids on the Missouri River in 1795. By 1840, several hundred people lived and worked in Des Moines while construction began on a flour mill and courthouse complex that would be located atop an artificial hill called " Castle Hill." In 1851, the city of Des Moines incorporated as a city with a population of 2,500 people. The first mayor was James Hickey and street names included First Street (later Trade Street), Second Street (later State Road), Third Street (now Veterans Memorial Boulevard), Fourth Street (now Main Streetside Drive), Fifth Avenue (now East First Avenue), Sixth Avenue (now Interstate 35W) and Seventh Avenue (now I-635). In 1865, during the American Civil War, Battle Creek Bridge over Iowa River was destroyed by Union troops under General Ulysses S Grant during his march through Iowa looking for Confederate forces encampment around Mount Pleasant. A year later, Battle Creek Bridge over Minnesota River became operational again following repairs made by then- Governor Amos Brownell and General John Custer's cavalry raid into northern Minnesota months earlier that October - thus ending any fear of Union troops crossing bridges into Illinois or Wisconsin during this time period acrossIowaRiver! Des Moines, Washington is a small town in the U.S. state of Washington located on the Des Moines River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 1,959 and it is part of the Spokane metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1853 by John Wesley Powell and named for his hometown, Manchester, England. It became an incorporated city in 1903 and a seat of commerce in 1912. The townsite that lies today near the river's mouth was first settled by Native Americans in pre-European times as trading posts between the Clallam Nation and other tribes along the Snake River Valley. The first permanent settler arrived in 1853, when John Wesley Powell came downriver from Oregon to explore what he called "the great new country." Powell's party discovered coal and gold mines at Mount Adams but abandoned their exploration because of poor weather conditions. In 1855, George Stevenson set up a ferry service across the Des Moines River from what is now Des Moines to Kandiyoke (now Oso) on Massacre Island for transportation goods coming downriver from British Columbia. The Ferry Service ceased operations about 1907 due to vandalism by local youths who damaged or destroyed equipment used for transporting passengers across the river during summer months; however, it continued periodically until 1954 when it was replaced by Interstate 90A which cut off access to Massacre Island. In 1902–3,[1] Des Moines experienced its only tornado outbreak when two large branches snapped off trees near Main Street and whipped through townkilling 12 people including six children aged six to ten years old while they were playing inside their homes.[2] On October 21st 1912,[3] a severe tornado touched down just east of town center destroying most buildings within one mile (1 km). Survivors described seeing cottonwood trees snap like twigs with deep cuts running perpendicular to each other; windows were smashed out entire doors with iron bars protruding out; pieces of cars lay overturned all around streets filled with mud and debris; roofs collapsed onto automobiles parked nearby; there were even reports of people being sucked into tornadoes indoors! A National Guard unit deployed from Spokane arrived within minutes[4] but no damage was reported as winds speeded up before dissipating suddenly over Puget Sound late that night without any injuries or fatalities reported
The first permanent settlers in Des Moines were the Fort Worth Party, who arrived in 1836. The town was named for James K. Polk, the 34th President of the United States. The Polk family donated land to the town and it became a center for agricultural production. In 1907, Des Moines annexed Winona County and its seat, Rochester, became part of Des Moines.
