In 1869, Iowa ConsolidatedSeparate Railway Company laid track between Cedar Rapids and Waterloo Junction which connected two already separate railroad systems - Great Western Railway and Central Pacific Railroad - creating what would become known as "the great northwest road." This corridor would become one of America's most important railway systems with its stops at Minneapolis, St Paul and Spokane Falls among others before reaching Des Moines in 1912 when US Route 66 replaced it as the main artery connecting Minnesota to California via Interstate 10; this also helped spur development along I-10 within Polk County which reached its peak during World War II with factories such as Boeing Aircraft plants located hereabouts; however following the war many manufacturing jobs left Des Moines while other services rapidly became professionalized including healthcare (Hennepin Health System began operations here), banking (First National Bank & Trust moved into its current location across from KFC) and software development (Apple Inc.'s Headquarters Building relocated from Palo Alto to this section of town). These days much of Des Moines' recent growth has come from retail: In 2016 alone 590 new businesses opened in addition to more than 1 million square feet Added space since last 2020 – more than any other U S City!
