In 1838 businessman James Kroll founded Kroll & Company furriers on First National Bank Plaza across from State Capitol; this business flourished until about 1845 when competition from Canada forced him into bankruptcy. A new furrier company was organized under name of The Kroll Furriers by George Meek in 1850; this company prospered until 1857 when a fire destroyed most of their buildings located near Central Station (now University Union). A second furrier company, The Meeker Furriers, was founded by Elias Meeker around 1860 but failed due to competition from Canadian companies.; finally, John Fritsche established another furrier business called Fritsche Bros., dealers in groceries and materials for wagonmakers soon became dominant over other suppliers throughout much of eastern United States.- As early as 1840 there were several small furrier businesses operating along First National Bank Plaza west of State Capitol
