Des Moines is a city in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Area. The city was founded by Sylvester Beavers in 1854 as Cedar Rapids. The first permanent settler in what is now Des Moines was Solomon Rockwood in 1855.
