The history of Des Moines begins with its founding on November 3, 1847 by members of the United States Congress as part of Washington Territory which included present-day Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, Dayton and other townships. The location - on land that had been used for hunting and farming - was ideal for hosting a new territorial capital because it was within easy reach of both Ottawa (now Ottawa County) tothe north and Kansas City (now Missouri) tothe south. In 1848 President James Kiefer designated Washington Territory's capital at Iowa City where his administration relocated from Council Bluffs, Iowa due to increasing political unrest throughout Illinois over claims to Indian lands east of Rock Island River. In early June 1849 President James Kiefer moved his administrative offices back into Washington Territory Headquarters when he approved legislation creating Polk County out of parts of Johnson County including Waterloo Township northwest of Burlington Heights Road/4th Street). On July 1st 1850 local residents voted 54% in favor of annexing Northwest Des Moines Township located just east of downtown Des Moines onto which they donated 2 square miles (5 km²) deeded by their founders – more thandouble any other township incorporation attempt that year! In 1949DesMoines celebrated its centennial with events ranging froma large parade down Fourth Avenue to an open house at Waveland Mall commemorating 100 years since incorporation!
