Des Moines, Washington is a town in Clark County, Washington, United States. The population was 8,737 at the 2010 census. It is the fastest growing city in the state of Washington. The area that would become Des Moines was first settled by fur traders in the 1800s. The first post office was established in 1836, and it became known as Cedar Rapids. In 1856, Iowa Territory was created from parts of Oregon and Montana and Des Moines became its capital. The first store opened in Des Moines on November 20, 1857. When Territorial Governor James Kapp recommended that a new capital be located east of Cedar Rapids because of its location on the Sacramento River (later to become Boise), Des Moines won over Cedar Rapids for the position. In 1907, Des Moines annexed part of rural agricultural community of Newton which had been named "Newton" after local resident John Newton who donated land for a school and church there. This annexation increased the population to 11 residents when it formally took effect on February 1, 1907. On October 25, 1912 an act authorizing construction of a bridge across Cedar River were passed by Congress and signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson with $2 million from USDA's Federal Highway Administration under Secretary Harold Latham – at that time only the nation's third such program ever authorized by Congress; this project would eventually span 653 miles (1,100 km) across 10 states with Interstate highways running through every single one of them! Although initially built as twin spans near what is now downtown Des Moines proper (just north of I-80/US 64), both spans were later replaced with one long bridge spanning all 12 river courses just south of downtown – making this one massive engineering accomplishment! The original steel arches were replaced in 1978-1981 by more recent cast iron arches upon completion – an event celebrated each year on October 25th throughout much OFHN media coverage! For all these years following opening day “the big day” NOBODY KNOWS WHY!!! Why? Des Moines is a city in Iowa, United States. It is the county seat of Polk County. The population was 729 at the 2010 census and it has an estimated population of 1,849 in 2020. The Des Moines metropolitan area had a total population of 805,636 in 2016. The first permanent settler in what would become Des Moines was George A. Smith on November 3, 1845. At that time the land comprising modern-day Polk County was still part of Illinois Territory. On December 12, 1846, Iowa Territorial Governor Jesse Benton issued a proclamation naming Des Moines as the capital of Iowa due to its location at the confluence of the Cedar and Ohio Rivers. In 1847, James Kapp set up shop near present-day First National Bank and built himself a log cabin which he named "Kapp's Ferry." In 1850, Iowa State Senator John Pemberton moved from Council Bluffs to Des Moines and started trading goods with Dakota traders on what would eventually be called "Pemberton's Road." By 1860, about 20 businesses were located in downtown Des Moines with 300 residents; today this number exceeds 500 because many businesses have relocated since then within walking or driving distance of each other for shopping or work opportunities! In 1862 during the American Civil War (the war that began with secession by southern slave states), much activity took place around present-day Des Moines due to Union military recruitment drives across the state including efforts by General Stephen Aurtz to move Confederate troops from Council Bluffs into Polk County so they could be used against them there should they attempt to escape Confederates strongholds elsewhere in the state. As Union soldiers moved through town looking for rebels%, stores windows were blacked out so customers couldn't see who was coming inside and this tactic increased popular support among Union forces for their cause! On December 12th1862 President Abraham Lincoln signed Proclamation No 2 ordering all male citizens between 16 and 50 years old across Iowa territory aged 21 or over to register for service in either army or navy if needed during wartime; this was called " enlistment age ". Over 4000 men from Polk County registered within two weeks including 100% males! Many farmers also enlisted as soldiers such as David Jenssen who became known as "Iron David" because he donated his muscle mass to help conquer wagon trains full of supplies needed by army troops marching towards Missouri! On January 6th 1863 Captain John Dickey led 10 cavalrymen into downtownDes Moines after being ordered by General Ulysses S Grant not to fire upon civilians when they met resistance trying raid homes just outside town limits – an event now known as “Dickey’s Raid” Aftermath: This event caused some damage but no casualties to local people & only attracted attention from Federal officers who decided not pursue further action

After the war ended, many businesses were closed and many citizens lost their jobs; however, new opportunities began to arise for those who had been able to stay afloat thanks to Fidelity Investments’ purchase of half of Polk County government and incorporation into that company’s headquarters complex known as “TheDESMoines Incorporated” which still stands today on 5th Avenue South across from City Hall (the original building). After more than 50 years of growth and change at TheDESMoines Incorporated – including several expansions that added additional floorspace – downtownDes Moines experienced its most dramatic transformation beginning in earnest following federal funding provided through HUD's Section 8 housing assistance program under Mayor William Burton’s leadership in 1978-1979 which together with subsequent economic development led to some keynoting dignitaries such as then First Lady Barbara Bush calling upon Mayor Burton during her 1984 visit to town center just north of downtownDesMoines Incorporated - essentially becoming one giant Nameplate Plaza!
