By 1872, when Iowa became an independent country, Des Moines had become an important transportation hub for settlers moving westward into new territories acquired from Mexico during that year's Mexican–American War. For many years thereafter, it served as both a stopping point for travelers on their way eastward across Nebraska unloading goods before journeying on to Kansas or Nebraska Territory; as well as being one of several Indian reservations located within Polk County boundaries at that time (along with Wapello and Iola). As such, it experienced increased development throughout the years despite occasional bouts of drought or other natural disasters – including three devastating fires in 1908 which destroyed more than 20 homes and businesses in downtown Des Moines alone! In 1912 developer George Hearn bought land northeast of downtown from local farmer Jens Jensen for $5 per acre ($100 today). He immediately began building what would become Hearn Center – one of America’s first high-rise shopping malls! Construction continued through World War II but halted due to air raids; however, resumed after passage of the National Defense Act in 1946 which authorized military construction within Oklahoma’s borders Hearn died suddenly just days before his mall opened; however, his widow kept developing it until her death in 1976. Des Moines is a small, unincorporated community in King County, Washington, United States. It is located on the Des Moines River, east of Seattle. The population was 927 at the 2000 census. The first settlement in what is now Des Moines was made by Logans Indians in 1854. A post office was established at Des Moines in 1855, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1906, the City of Seattle annexed part of King County to form a new city government with its own jail and police department. This caused some tension between the two municipalities as they had different interests and goals for their respective areas. In 1912, the city council decided that Des Moines would be merged intoSeattle after a campaign led by Mayor John Silliman. Portland arrived on the Puget Sound region in 1889 and began expanding rapidly into what are now eastern King County and Spokane Valley; there were no villages or towns along either side of the river before Portland developed anything like an infrastructure forstadt growth. The first European settler to arrive in what is now Des Moines Township was Abram Weiser who platted the village of West Bloomfield on July 10, 1892 (). Weiser named it after his late father-in-law's farm west of Minneapolis () which he had bought from Peter Krieger when he became head farmer for that area (). A post office called "West Bloomfield" was established at this location on November 5, 1893 (), but it failed to take off because people did not want to leave their farms behind to go to a town where they might have to share everything with others (). On January 6, 1895(), David Hentges opened up a store at 12th & Market Streets called Centralia News Agency (renamed Northwest News Agency soon afterwards). Hentges died within months of opening up shop (); his son took over operations until 1911(). On October 2nd 1905 (), Isaac Stevens opened up an hotel near downtown Spokane Falls known as Stevens Hotel (). Stevens also ran several grocery stores throughout Spokane Falls during this time (); one such store still remains open today as Safeway Inc.. On December 6th 1907 (), Winthrop Ames opened up his very first grocery store at 4010 N State St., which Powers Liquors still operates today (). Ames also ran many other businesses during this time including: laundry services (now Wacoal), dry goods (now Haggen), pizzas (later Papa John's Pizza), gasoline stations (!—the original Topeka gas station closed down around 1970), ice cream parlors (one remains open today as Ben & Jerry's) - all while residing just blocks away from home!
