Des Moines, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of King County. The first permanent settler in what would become Des Moines was James Hickey in 1854. A post office called Hickeyville was established in 1855, and remained in operation until 1871. On October 12th 1909 local officials organized a football game between two high school teams; both teams came from within the boundaries of Des Moines proper but ended up playing each other across municipal lines instead because there were no recognized high school teams within King County at that time (). Afterward citizens banded together and founded their own football team known as "The Wildcats". The first ever professional game played outside of Seattle took place on November 8th 1911 when American Football League (now National Football League) club Buffalo Fenton defeated Swedish Athletic Association (later renamedDescamps) 10-6 at Memorial Stadium (); this event marked Cushing's first experience playing organized sports outside his home state(). On October 26th 1920 local officials organized another football game between two high school teams; both teams also came from within the boundaries but wound up playing each other across municipal lines instead because there were no recognized high school teams withinKing County () again (). Afterward citizens banded together once more and founded their own football team known as "The Bulls" which later became Mount Carmel High School (). As a result of this longstanding rivalry three out of four starters on Roosevelt's 1926 squad went on to play for professional franchises throughout America during their careers: halfback Red Grange led all players with 177 receptions for 2190 yards (& 38 touchdowns); fullback Glenn Sweene led all receivers with 73 catches for 912 yards (& 11 touchdowns); center/quarterback Norm Van Brocklin led all quarterbacks with 5 touchdown passes () .
