Covington is a town in Yakima County, Washington, United States. The population was 5,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wenatchee–Douglas metropolitan area. The first European to see what is now Covington was shipwrecked on November 25, 1792 while exploring Puget Sound and he named it "Nisqually" after his discovery. In 1851, as part of the Oregon Treaty with the United States, Covington became a reservation for Native Americans and in 1855 became an incorporated community under the name of Yakima Falls. The post office closed in 1907 when Yakima Falls merged into Wenatchee. In 1899, Covington School District No. 1 opened its doors to students from all over Yakima County when Wenatchee School District No. 3 closed its doors at that time. With enrollment reaching 710 students by 1903-4 (the school had been built on land donated by Jock Slocum), a new school was built near the intersection of State Route 10 and Main Street in 1905-6 and renamed Covington High School after pioneer settler Orville Gentry Beall who had purchased much of the land around present day Covington during his surveying trip through Interior Washington in 1898-9 following completion of The Geyser Field (); Beall's survey also included what are now two blocks east ofpresent day mile marker 12 on State Route 10 just north of present day Park Avenue). After serving as a high school until 1955-56 when it became part of Wenatchee Community College District #1., Cushington Middle School opened in 1959-60 and then again from 1961-82 as Wenatchee East Middle School before becoming Wenatchee High School again from 1983 until current times which has been located adjacent to Building 6 on Forest Service Road 2 about one mile south west (west)of Knolls Rd.). A new elementary school building was completed in 2006 at 6500 block N 57th Ave SE which replaced an old industrial building used since 1954 for various gradeschooling operations including prekindergarten through 8th grade; special education services have also been housed there since then including Head Start/Daycare programs for children with special needs; currently there are more than 30 classrooms across 7 buildings some with Technologies systems like Apple iPad’s/smartphones being used for classroom instruction along with larger projection screens & projectors; along side this facility there are several large open fields complete with running track & soccer field as well as several smaller fields where playscheets take place each fall during early autumn days prior to Christmas Tree Lighting ceremonies held each year on or around December 15th

During World War II, Covington experienced significant growth as an Army base. However, due to its small population and lack of infrastructure, the city struggled to maintain basic services such as water supply or transportation. When the military closed down in 1991, Covington slowly lost its status as a major urban center in Washington State. Today, much of the downtown is abandoned and is used for storage or for various other purposes.
