Covington, Washington is a small town in the Yakima Valley of the United States. It was founded in 1847 by banker and politician George Covington and his wife, Nancy. The town's population was 1,089 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Yakima River near its confluence with the Columbia River. The first people to live in what is now Covington were some of George Covington's employees who came down from Seattle to help him start his business. The first permanent settler was James Moody, who built a cabin in 1849. In 1854, John Denny and his family moved into what is now Main Street and started a grocery store there. They were followed by others over time, including Alexander Graham Bell and J.P. Morgan Jr.. In 1907, Covington became part of King County and had its own government; it retained that status until 1959 when it merged with Kent County to form Thurston County. In 1959 it became one of the seventeen cities within Thurston County created as part of move towards statewide urbanization under Governor David Dunlap’s initiative known as “The Thurston Revolution” Today much of what made up Rancho San Francisco (now Deming) burned during an accidental fire on December 4th 1902 while copper mining operations were going on nearby; this event is generally considered to be the beginning of the city's growth as a commercial center due to its proximity to repeated natural disasters which provided opportunities for new businesses to enter into business without fear of Insurance claims or lawsuits
The Covington area was first settled by the Puyallup tribe in the late 18th century. They named their village after a creek that flowed through their land. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Covington were French traders and explorers who explored the region during the mid-19th century. They named the area for Saint Catherin, who they thought had died in a car accident near present-day Tacoma. The first settlements in what is now Covington were made up of small groups of people who prospected for gold and other minerals in the region. In 1858, the United States acquired most of British Columbia from Canada and established land claims here. This led to heavy Anglo American settlement of Covington throughout much of the 19th century. In 1875, local farmers built a bridge over Puget Sound which connected them to Seattle. This led to an influx of people and businesses into town and helped spur development around this time. In 1906, King County was created and Covington became one of its component counties. It remained an agricultural community until later years when industry began to take hold in the area as well as new housing developments becoming available along Puget Sound Boulevard. By 1970, however, it had become an increasingly suburban town with few commercial or industrial properties remaining within its boundaries
