The area now known as Covington was then home to the Ohlone people, and later the Pomo people. Englishman Nicholas Cogswell founded a small town in what is now Okanogan County in 1875, and named it after his friend and mentor George Covington, a British general who had fought in India. In 1907, Seattle City Council member John Birdsell proposed that the town be renamed after him in honor of his achievements. The name stuck, and Okanogan County became part of Seattle when it annexed it in 1922.
