Covington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. Covington was founded in 1851 by investors from Portland, Oregon. It is named after the nearby county seat of Des Moines. The town's first post office opened on July 3, 1851. The first settler in Covington was John Ahern who arrived in 1850 and built a log cabin on the site of present-day Covington High School. In 1852, three other settlers - John Hickey, Frederick Kapp and Michael Armstrong - established a small farm east of the original cabin and called it Rocksville. This early settlement also included a schoolhouse and two residences; one known as "Hickory House" and another as "Branch cottage". In 1854, residents of Rocksville petitioned for incorporation as Covington Township; however, this request was refused because Rockville lacked a courthouse or jail. In 1855, commissioners voted to name their new township after then-Senator Lucius Clay (R-Ohio). On October 15 of that year, they voted 3 to 2 to change its name to King County when Territorial Governor James Kenedy granted clemency to George Stephenson over his refusal to sign the Organic Act of 1792 which repealed annexation treaties between British Columbia and Washington Territory. In 1861, during the American Civil War (1861–1865), several thousand men from surrounding counties came into King County to fight for Confederate forces; many residents of Covington joined them in support. During the war years there were also large numbers of refugees coming into King County including nearly 4500 people from Des Moines who had fled Iowa's conflict with Kansas following that state's secession from the United States on February 16th., 1861 After the war ended in 1865 there was an influx of new settlers intoKing County which contributed greatly to overall growth rates during that period; those newcomers included many Vanportmen who had been relocated from Portland due to funding shortages brought about by Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation – although most Vanportmen returned home within weeks after Lincoln announced his decision not to re-enslave any more slaves following his inauguration on January 20th., 1865 As part of burgeoning Seattle–Tacoma metropolitan area during this time period some businesses moved out westward such as meatpacking plants like Jardine & Co’s Gault Mill near Tacoma and Southern Pacific Railroad’s Everett Branch Line just south of Mount Rainier National Park where cedar lumber was processed until 1924 . Manufacturing started happening again around Puget Sound region but initially centered around Tacoma since wheat productionATIONSWERElimitedbyenvironmentalrestrictionsduringthe EARLY20thCENTURY . By 1925 aluminum smelting operations were setting up shop along Elliott Bay near Bellevue while Boeing Corporation set up shop down at Renton AFB acrosssoundfromSeattle . However much later Boeing moved its operations away from Seattle toward Renton AFB when military aircraft became too expensively To fabricate at Sea World .
