In 1872 developer John PemberTON built a home on what is now First Avenue NE near Whatcom High School which he called Bellevue Heights after Bellevue Hill outside London, England where he had been born into a prominent family while still living at home with his parents and siblings aged six through thirteen years old at the time they left for England). By 1880 Bellevue Heights had grown to include over 200 residences with four square miles (10 km2) of commercial strip behind it on East Yesler Street between First Avenue NE and Second Avenue NE..
