In 1892, there was an individual named John Fenton who started manufacturing revolvers out of brass tubing at his home on Seventh Street. This company became known as John's Brass Works. At this time, brass firearms began to become more popular because they could handle more rounds than iron firearms. In 1903, John's Brass Works merged with another company called Colt Firearms Company which became one of the most well-known firearm manufacturers in America. During World War II, many people in Covington worked on defense projects such as assembling weapons like tanks and airplanes. Many people also worked at Colt Firearms Company during this time frame; specifically Artemas Ward who designed and produced assault rifles for the military during World War II. During the Cold War era, many people continued working at Colt Firearms Company even though it was acquired by Beretta Corporation in 1970. However, after Beretta Corporation went bankrupt in 1994, all employees of Colt Firearms Company lost their jobs including Artemas Ward who died shortly thereafter from pancreatic cancer aged 78 years old

He named it after Nicholas Covington, an English nobleman who had accompanied Cook on his expedition and then taken up land near present-day Issaquah. In 1856, John Wesley Covington donated land to the town for housing and schools. The town was incorporated as a village in 1907. Its name comes from "Covenant" – an old Indian word meaning "to agreed." The village became incorporated as a city in 1959. At that time it had a population of 7,000 people but by 2000 it had shrunk to 562 residents with a median income of $51,534. The city has experienced several civic changes over the years: In 1976 it merged with neighboring SeaTac to form one municipality; in 1990 it annexed portions of Shoreline Village; and most recently, in 2006–2007, it annexed Greenwood Village which lies just east of its boundaries on Soundview Drive NE.
