Covington, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 12,874 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue metropolitan area. Covington is located on the eastern edge of downtown Seattle and is bordered by Bellevue to the east and north, Pioneer Square to the west, Union Station to the south, and Ballard to the southeast. Interstate 5 runs through Covington's center; it linksSeattle with Tacoma and Bellevue. The first mention of Covington occurs in 1851 when John Wesley Parkhurst wrote about his journey from Vancouver Island across Puget Sound to Perth Amboy in New Jersey via what he called "the short cut" through Covington Lake. In 1872 Abraham Lincoln passed through Covington on his way from Olympia to Ellensburg. Other early residents included Captessors George Whiteside and William Fenton who operated a ferry service over Strait of Juan de Fuca between Bothell and Everett beginning in 1876. In 1907 Averell Harriman organized an agricultural show at Star Lake which drew many people from throughout Washington State including farmers from what would become part of Maple Valley (now Auburn). This event led to development around Star Lake as well as adjacent properties that would later be annexed into Covington proper during annexation processes in 1903-1904. The Agricultural Show Site became known as Harriman Park today. In 1915 Leland Stanford Junior founded Stanford University here after winning an election for governor of California against James Mellingham (another Republican). At this time much of Seattle was still rural so Stanford established himself as one of America's leading university leaders. In 1924 Microsoft cofounder Paul Allen bought 4 acres next door to Star Lake for $100; Allen would eventually develop it into one of Seattle's most eminent neighborhoods - Harborview Heights. In 1881, the townsite was renamed Sandpoint after Captain George W. Sandpoint, who had been a leader in the discovery of oil reserves near that location.
