This trend continued into the postwar years with larger businesses hiring workers through union Local 3754 which represented agricultural workers throughout Puget Sound region including Covington In 1958, when land along Yakima River was leased from Snohomish Tribe for $1 per acre (the second largest lease in history at that time), some residents saw this opportunityto establish themselves as a separate community away from downtownSeattle while still being close enough to continue using services provided by city hall such as education, health care, sewerage and trash collection . Covington is a small town in Walla Walla County, Washington, United States. The population was 992 at the 2010 census. Covington is located on the banks of the Columbia River and is part of the Wenatchee–Issaquah Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Covington" was given to this community by General James K. Polk during his visit to Walla Walla in 1884. At that time, he named two villages in what are now Covington and Issaquah after Generals John Armstrong Cushing and David Hunter respectively. In 1887, Leland Stanford Jr., brother of Stanford University founder Leland Stanford Sr., founded a ranch just north of Covington called Stanwood which became one of the most influential cattle ranches in America. In 1899, representatives from four counties including Walla Walla voted to annex their townships into King County so that they would have more transportation options available for their citizens. The annexation created tension between the communities as different groups clamored for control over resources unique to each locality (such as water rights). A few years later, when King County decided not to annex any more townships into it, Grays Harbor County annexed them instead because they thought it would be better for their economy than advertising king county services such as education or health care within covedon itself. This caused friction between Grays Harbor and Covedon over who should get jurisdiction over what amenities while residents continued to refer to both communities as "Covington". Although there has been little change since then other than an increase in population density (+150 people per square mile), much attention has been paid to improving infrastructure such as roads and bridges which have made life easier for locals but also generated criticism from drivers who say that lack of sidewalks makes streets difficult for bikes and cars alike; however officials insist that these issues will soon be addressed with plans announced last year for $5 million worth of renovation projects across the cityscape alone
