The first permanent settler in Covington was James Hargrave in 1847. He named his farm "Hargrave's Mill". The post office was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1920. In 1904, the townsite of Covington were surveyed and organized as a town by an act of the Yakima County Legislature. The name honor General Ulysses S. Grant who died that year. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 627 people, 191 households, and 139 families residing in the town. The population density was 17 people per square mile (6/km²). There were 233 housing units at an average density of 8 per square mile (3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White and 1% African American. Hispanic or Latino residents made up 2%

Covington was a small town in Ferry County, Washington, United States until the early 20th century. It is now part of the Spokane metropolitan area. The Covington post office was established in 1881, and discontinued operation in 1954. The first settlers to the area were French Canadians who arrived from Quebec in 1814. They named their community after Saint Cuthbert, an 8th-century bishop of Canterbury who helped evangelize North America. By 1826, the population had grown to about 100 people and the town began to be called "Covington". A store and school were built in 1828. The first settler to die in Covington was George Davenport in 1836. The town grew rapidly during the years leading up to prohibition, when many farmers turned to alcohol for economic reasons. In 1907, a school building and store were erected on a site that would later become First Baptist Church; this structure still stands today. In 1911, Covington became a census-designated place (CDP). In 1966 it became an unincorporated community within Spokane metropolitan region as part of consolidation of numerous unincorporated communities within that boundaries. The name change came about because at that time most of what is now known as Spokane originated from CDPs set aside for that purpose by then-mayor Ben Nighthawk (now Spokane City Councilmember). The original intent of these designated areas hadn’t changed: they were just being renamed more frequently because new neighborhoods had been created within them since their creation – something which continues currently today with some exceptions such as Sammamish Valley which has been reclassified several times since its inception). On July 1st 1951 all of Washington state joined forces with Oregon into the newly formed Interstate 5 System; this made Covington one of those jurisdictions included within that system for highway purposes only (the other jurisdictions being Thurston County and Kennewick County which remained separate highways until 1990.) As part of I-5's expansion project through eastern Washington*, I-5 eliminated most exit ramps from eastbound I-5 so traffic entering or exiting from southbound I-5 encountered exits only on northbound I-5 through Covington* – making it difficult for local residents who wished to access services located near those exit ramps (such as libraries) without travelling into neighboring Thurston or Kennewick counties*; however*, recent construction projects have largely corrected this situation by reopening some old exit ramps so now locals can easily access both eastbound I-5 and southbound I-5 without having to go far outside their borough.* Today much evidence remains surrounding pioneer days including William Haggerty's cabin visible across RR tracks used by steamboats landing passengers at port * JF Phelps house also stood witness

In 1881, Covington became a county seat and began to grow rapidly due to its location on the Puget Sound River. By 1907, Covington had over 2,000 residents and was home to two churches and a school. In 1916, Covington became an incorporated city and began to grow even more quickly due to its new infrastructure including a water system, library, and hospitals. In 1949, Covington WAS hit with a devastating tornado that destroyed most of the town center. Despite this setback, Covington continued to grow as an important financial center until the late 1990s when it experienced significant declines in population.
