He then moved up through Dole’s political career eventually being named Campaign Manager for Kansas Governor John Engler in 1976 before moving onto Engler’s successful run for U S Senate unopposed in 1978 which led him back into politics where he was electedGovernor of Kansas three years later defeating incumbent Maynard Hutchison with 54%ofthe vote to 44%. After leaving Governorship he became a lobbyist working principally with corporate clients until 1980 when he married Carolynn Susman whom he had met while working on her senate campaign against future presidential candidate Ronald Reagan – they had two children together prior to their separation later that year but remarried after she won re-election as governor (they have four other children). In 1982 Cheney left lobbying again joining The Fords Corporation where he worked until 1984 when they bought an interest in The Roper Polling Co., a polling firm infamous for its use by both Reagan and then Attorney General Edwin Meese during their probes into Watergate. In 1988 Cheney was tapped by then George H W Bush Sr., his father-in-law to be his running mate on his successful run for Vice Presidential election against Michael Dukakis who lost 50%-to-48%. In 2004 Cheney narrowly lost re-election against John Kerry but regained victory two years later against John McCain via Electoral College votes instead awarding him 306 electoral votes out 538 cast resulting him within 1 million votes or 3%ofthe popular vote however this did not stop him from becoming one half owner (alongside Rupert Murdoch) of The Washington Post Company which gave him increasing influence within both Republican Party establishment and Administration during those years leading up to 2008 presidential election whenhe became National Security Adviser effective January 20th, 2009 following Condoleezza Rice's retirement effective December 31st following her unsuccessful bid for another term as President due to allegations she influenced Decision making regarding Operation Neptune Spear which killed Osama bin Laden
Cheney was born on April 14, 1947 in Atchison, Kansas. He is the son of Richard Cheney and Jane Kagan. From 1972 to 1976 he attended Yale Law School where he earned his J.D. In 1977 he became a lawyer at Scranton, PA-based WilmerHale LLP. He then moved to Houston TX in 1980 and joined the firm of Richards, Day & Cohen LLP where he rose through the ranks to become an associate partner in 1990 and a full partner in 1998. He served as Deputy Attorney General for the George W. Bush Administration from 2001 to 2003 and as Secretary of Defense from 2003 to 2007. He has also been involved with many other businesses including Freeport McMoRan Corporation (now BP) from 1981-1985, Brown Brothers Harriman Ltd., helmed by him at Brown Brothers Harriman until 1992, Phillips 66 (later ExxonMobil) from 1984-1988, The Republican National Committee from 1996-2001 and Harken Energy Corporation during its early years before it merged with ConocoPhillips in 2006
