In 2002, Cheney was appointed as chairman of Energy Research and Development Corporation (ERDC), a subsidiary of IFC Resources Inc., which is owned by Occidental Petroleum Corporation. ERDC is involved in development projects for energy sources such as shale gas and tar sands oil which have been met with skepticism by many scientists due to their potential environmental impacts. In 2004, Cheney ran for president again but lost to John Kerry. After leaving Halliburton in 2001, Cheney began making frequent appearances on Wall Street where he has bragged about how well he has done since taking over at the company: "I'm one man who can make an impact on Wall Street." He also founded The Weekly Standard magazine in 2006 after leaving The New York Times Magazine effective January 1st, 2007
