Centralia, Washington is a town in Kittitas County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Centralia is part of the Wenatchee-Tumwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Centralia was James Ransom in 1881. He and his family erected a log cabin on what is now US Route 99W. The name "Centralia" was given to the community by Wm Houghton after he saw it on a map of Washington Territory in 1882. In 1886, John Hinkle built a store and post office in Centralia. In 1896, he donated land for the Kit Carson National Forest and named one of its sections "Hinkle Park". A school opened in 1907 and remained operational until 1959; it was moved to its current location within Kittitas County Park in that year. The town's second store opened on US Route 99E in 1912 near what is now the Walmart Supercenter; that store has since been replaced by an apartment complex across the street from the original building. William Fenton became Centralia's first mayor on November 3, 1916 when he won election over incumbent George Landon Jr.; Fenton served two terms before being impeached for bribery charges which he subsequently lost to Harry Clark Hayes. A branch courthouse operated out of what is now centraliatown hall from 1932-1968; during this time courthouse business included such cases as those heard by Seattle Municipal Court Judge Earle Cushing (1932-1964), Everett Ewing (1948-1970), Jens Jensen (1974-1978), Grover Cleveland Alexander (1980-1982) and Julius Caesar Nelson (1988). Centralia, Washington is a small town in King County, Washington on the banks of the Columbia River. The town was established in 1892 and became an incorporated municipality in 1912. Centralia is located about 20 miles west of Seattle and 50 miles east of Vancouver. The population of Centralia was 9,808 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in Centralia was Nathaniel Lyon who arrived from Portland, Oregon on July 1, 1892. Lyon purchased 640 acres (2 km²) of land from John Day for $10 per acre ($1/km²). Lyon built a log cabin on his land and named it "Centralia". He also erected a stone house which still stands today as the Old Centralia Post Office. In 1912, the Town Council created a fire department and annexed to King County. In 1917, during World War I, Centralia served as headquarters for the United States Military Commanding General Northwest Field Force under Lieutenant General George Custer. The command post operated out of what is now known as Roosevelt Hall which housed tents used by troops on maneuvers near central Puget Sound. Following World War II, Centralia experienced growth with several industries becoming established including lumbering, brewing beer and automobiles. With these businesses came increased traffic which caused problems such as flooding that plagued central Puget Sound area in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1990 referendum vote conducted by local residents to annex into Tacoma resulted in incorporation into Tacoma proper rather than become part of Seattle-King county because zoning regulations did not allow annexation within city limits without approval from Mayor Tom Bateson. This event helped solidify downtown's status as one ofSeattle's most vibrant areas withmany popular restaurants and nightlife options available within walking distance or bus stops only minutes away from downtown core

Hinton, built a cabin on the present site of Centralia School in 1881. Centralia began to grow quickly after its founding, and by 1887 it had a population of just over 100 people. In 1907, Centralia became the capital of Washington County. In 1916, it was renamed after General George Custer, who had died during World War I. In 1924, Centralia became an incorporated municipality under the name of Centralia Heights. In 1962, it changed its name once again toCentralia Township when it merged with neighboring town of Dellwood. Today, Centralia is a small community with a population of around 120 people. It has a number of shops and businesses as well as two schools -Centralia School and Greenlawn Elementary School- which provide education for children from pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade.
