After World War II Centralia experienced rapid growth with many new businesses being established including restaurants, stores, carshops, and schools; however some issues did not go away such as poverty and high levels of crime.[2] In 1957 Centria became home to first integrated public school in Washington State when Northview School opened on land donated by parents from neighboring townships who objected to integration at their schools but wanted their children given access to Centria's resources[3]. In 1978 Centria voters passed Measure 9 creating a city government with full powers over all aspects of municipal life including zoning ordinances Establishing parks & recreation areas within Centria limits became law In 1996Centria voted overwhelmingly against passage Of Initiative 872 , establishing Mandatory racial segregation within public education services
