The first permanent settler in Centralia were Keith and Karen Hargrave in 1911. The name "Centralia" was given to the town by George Stephenson for his new railway line between Seattle and Olympia. The town site was chosen because of the many creeks that drained into it, as well as its location on the north bank of the Columbia River. The first school in Centralia opened in 1912 and remained open until 1990. In 1913, Centralia became an incorporated municipality with its own government. In 1954, when Interstate 5 bypassed central Washington state, parts of central Washington experienced significant loss in population due to commuting costs associated with increased access to jobs outside the county seat of Wenatchee (the closest major city). This led to a proposal by then-Governor Ronald Reagan for Centralia to become an interchange point for I-5 and I-90/US 12/SR 99; however, no action was taken.[1] Finally, after years of wrangling over annexation from neighboring cities (including Yakima),[2]Centralia obtained full cityhood on November 3rd 2004 by popular vote.[3][4][5] At that time it had a population of 805 residents[6]. In 1898-99 an addition to the old Schoolhouse at 116 West Main Street was built as the new CentralIA High School with funds raised by local residents through fundraising drives and auctions of items such as furniture or farm products that were needed for construction purposes such as classrooms, power plants and other infrastructure projects sponsored by various civic organizations including the Knights of Columbus, American Legion Post #2 & 3 (now known as The United Methodist Church), Industrial Development District No 1 (later renamed United Steelworkers Local 7) & 2 (now known as The American Federation of Teachers), Pacific Northwest Chapter AFL-CIO (now known as Service Employees International Union) & Western Washington State Chamber of Commerce). That same year saw the opening of what would become one of America's largest lending institutions when Bankers Trust Company moved into downtown from its previous location on First Avenue NW across from Interstate 5 between Steiner Road and Highway 99W just north of SR-121A/SR-122A aka “Highway 99W”).
