In 1865, Centralia became the capital of Washington Territory and soon began to see growth with its growing population. Centralia, Washington is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 3,814 at the 2010 census. Centralia was founded in 1854 by German immigrants and became an incorporated community in 1885. It is one of the few remaining towns in King County that originated from European immigration. The first settler to arrive in Centralia was Andreas Siegel who arrived with his family on July 4, 1854. He established himself as a farmer and trader near present-day Centralia Lake. In 1857 Siegel married Anna Catharine Krueger and they started a family of six children. Their home at 524 State Street still stands today as the only intact building in the town center. In 1865, Hermann Loesch bought land east of present-day Centralia and began construction on what would become his large lumber mill which would employ over 100 men for years to come. The Loesch Mill could produce up to 12 cords of lumber per day when it opened its doors! As industry began to grow around Centralia, so did its population; by 1880 the community had reached 681 residents! By 1890 centralian school District No 8 had been organized with 11 schools comprising grades K-12thinderly Schoolhouse No 1 (now known as Olympia High School) serving grades 1st through 4th grade along with two middle schools – Westport Middle School (grades 5-8) and Eastside Middle School (grades 9-12). The Community hall served as the local government’s offices until 1949 when it burned down due to an electrical storm during World War II A new school building was completed in 1951 and soon thereafter centralian services such as water supply, streetlights and fire protection were added to the mix In 1955 the post office closed but continued mail service until 1985 when internet access made USPS Postal history again !! In 1990 centralian citizens voted overwhelmingly not to annex into unincorporated Thurston County
