Centralia, Washington was a small town in King County, Washington from 1855 to 1925. The town was located on the banks of the Spokane River and it is now part of the Centralia, WA Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Centralia peaked at 9,811 in 1907 and then decreased until 1930 when it reached 7,918. After that point, the population declined again until reaching 5,746 in 1955. The first settler in Centralia was John Atherton who arrived in 1855. Atherton founded what is now known as Atherton Hall. In 1870 George Sutherlin settled in Centralia and built his home there which still stands today. By 1920 Centralia had a grocery store, post office and two churches. There were also three schools- one for boys and two girls- but they closed by 1925 due to lack of enrollment. In 1927–28 Jens Rasmussen started construction on what would become the first school building in Centralia which he named "The School House". It opened on October 1st 1928 with 20 students grades 1-6thaged attending classes daily from 8am to 3pm across five classrooms/oathschools teaching reading cultivation math science etc.. The school continued to grow through 1928-1929 with an additional classroom being added each year until it reached its present form which consists of six classrooms/oathschools teaching all grade levels from PreKindergarten through 12th grade along with vocational training program for local businesses As time went on more people began moving into centralIA including farmers who bought land around the river for farming purposes as well as businessmen and women looking for a place to raise their families . Many businesses followed suit such as Wm Matson's Toltec Printing Shop (now Microsoft), Harry Emerson's Agricultural Implement Store (now KNR Radio), Bob Kapp's Hardware Store (now Kapp Bros.) before finally becoming extinct due to lack of business or population growth .
