Centralia is a town in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 7,491 at the 2010 census. Centralia is part of the Spokane metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Centralia was George H. Smith on September 8, 1851. He built a cabin on theoma River and named it "Centralia." A post office called Centralia was established in 1853, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1865 John D. Rockefeller bought title to land that includes present-day Centralia from James Waddell for $1,000 cash and drove out local Indians with his stockades and gunfire. By 1870 the town had sprung up around the railroad depot and small hotels situated along Capitol Street near First Hill Ave.. Lloyd George's landslide victory in Britain's general election of 1918 gave impetus to American efforts to build an empire abroad as rapidly as possible after World War I ended; this included plans for new railroads through Seattle and Tacoma – both towns were central to these schemes – but it soon became clear that Washington would not be ready for such largescale developmentyet (see also: The Great Northern Railway). In 1919 Rockefeller sold his interest in the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey to Henry Ford; this move helped spur agricultural production throughout western Washington which started to diversify into other businesses by 1924 (see: The Great Depression). The first settler in Centralia was George Butterfield, who arrived in 1853. By 1855, he and his family had built a log cabin on the site of what is now the Old Centralia Store. A post office called Centralia was established in 1856, and its first supervisor was J.F. Herron. In 1860, settlers from Spokane moved into central Kittitas County and erected a gristmill on the left bank of the Columbia River near present-day Whitman Regional Airport. In 1865, General Philip Sheridan led an army against Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War; as a result of this battle, General Sherman ordered allLogging operations to stop in Kittitas County due to their impact on field artillery preparation for future battles across Kentucky and Tennessee . In 1870s two other sawmills were also established: one by William Harkness on Elk Creek south of town and another by Dolphus Chappell on Big Beaver Creek east of town (now part of Whitman Regional Airport). By 1880 there were 10 businesses operating incentral Kittitas County with over 100 employees employing more than 350 people including farmers, lumberjacks and miners; these small towns supported each other through trade and transportation along Route 566 which connected them all." The industrial revolution began to take hold in America during this time with mills opening up throughout rural areas like Centralia where textiles such as cotton yarn or flaxseed would be processed into finished products such as clothing or shoes
