The first gun magazines in Centralia, Washington were established in 1887. The first magazine was called the Rifleman and was located at the local blacksmith shop. The second magazine was called the Pistolero and it was located at the local grocery store. The third magazine was called the Rifleman-Ammunition and it was located near what is now town square. In 1892, a new rifle magazine named the Pioneer was started up by Mr. J.G. McConnell and his son-in-law, John Gentry. It operated out of a small room in McConnell’s house on 3rd Avenue South minutes northeast of town square today known as CenturyLink Field (former home of Centralia High School). In 1903, Centralia had its own post office which gave rise to the idea of starting a mail order catalog for guns from various manufacturers that would be sent directly to residents in town by mail service instead of going through McConnell’s house or having to go through McConnell’s son-in-law John Gentry who did business out of his father-in-law’s house on 3rd Ave South until he retired in 1922 when he sold his interest to George Prentice who also ranCentralia Gun Shop until 1934 when his store burned down). The town was founded in 1892 by gold seekers John Wesley Howells and his partner James Wickersham. It was named for Centerville, Illinois, where Howells had been born in 1839. In 1907 Centralia was made an incorporated town with a mayor-council form of government. In 1927 it became an unincorporated community again. In 1951 Centralia became an urban center when it received its charter from the King County Board of Commissioners to become one of five cities within King County with city status (the other four were Seattle, Bellevue, Tacoma and Kirkland). Centralia achieved cityhood because it met all requirements set by the board including having a population over 20 thousand; having a local hospital; being adjacent to any county or state boundaries; and having zoning regulations that allowed for high-density development without sacrificing open space or natural resources. In 1903,Centralia hosted its first international exposition – the Seattle National Exposition – which attracted attention from around the world. As time went on, Centralia became known for its significant role in American culture and politics. Many famous people have had their beginnings or careers here including author Will Rogers (1874-1946), politician Ben Franklin (1771-1845), composer Edwin Bach (1858-1926), business executive Alfred Pritzker (1881-1965) and actor Clark Gable (1908-1983).
