After World War II, Centralia emerged as one of Washington's largest industrial centers and remained so through most of the 20th century. However, over time centralisation has led to social unrest and decline in economic status for many residents. In recent years however, growth in central business district has brought renewed vigor to centralia economy while preserving some aspects of traditional rural life

Centralia was founded in 1881 by John Wesley Stephenson and others as a small farming community on the east side of Lake Union, about 8 miles north of downtown Seattle. The name "Centralia" was derived from central location within the territory then known as Tacoma. The City of Centralia grew rapidly during World War II due to its proximity to military installations and resources such as aluminum production and fishing grounds. After the war, Centralia experienced rapid growth with many new residents coming in from surrounding rural towns and villages. In 1957, Centralia became an incorporated municipality with full voting rights, which helped support its rapid economic development during this time period. Centralia's success led to ambitious plans for expansion that included the construction of a new municipal building and major arterial roads around town. These projects were completed between 1960 and 1970; however, they did not result in significant growth or change in the city's overall population or economy until after Japanese-American internment ended in 1946. During this time period, many refugees from Japan settled in Centralia who had fled their homes due to wartime internment camps located near Tacoma and Olympia. As a result of these experiences, Centralia has developed strong ethnic ties throughout its community and retains a very diverse population today including both citizens of European descent ( chiefly Germans) as well as Asians ( primarily Japans). In recent years much attention has been paid to Downtown Centralia where several high-profile events have taken place including live music performances by Bruce Springsteen at KeyArena on November 5th 2014,[1] Apple Music Festival held on July 12th 2016 across three venues[2] headlined by Chance The Rapper[3]and most recently Amazon’s Prime Day event taking place over two days starting June 25th.[4] This intense focus on Downtown Centria is likely because it has become one of the fastest growing areas in town while also being home to some arguably important cornerstone businesses such as Microsoft,[5][6][7][8] Starbucks,[9][10] anchor stores like Macy’s[11][12], Safeway[13], KFC[14], Costco warehouses,[15][16][17] artists studios like Eveready Studios & SoundStage 21A[18],[19],[20],[21], restaurants like fast food chain Arby’s[22],[23],[24], pizza places[/25]; heavy industry such as Boeing plant Airbus engine testing center Southworth Labs; along with numerous smaller businesses clustered around transportation nodes like First Avenue Northeast and NE 95th Street Northeast
The Centralia Massacre took place on December 6, 1885, when militia units of the Washington Territory shot and killed six unarmed men in Centralia, Washington. The men were accused of being Indian guerrillas, and were reportedly unarmed at the time of their deaths.
