Centralia, Washington is a small town in Walla Walla County, Washington, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Centralia is the county seat of Walla Walla County and the only incorporated municipality in the county. In 1887, Centralia was founded as a posse town by members of the Yakima Indian Nation after they were forced from their reservation near Olympia. The first post office was established in Centralia on November 6, 1887. The name of the town was changed to Centralia on October 12, 1889. On May 3, 1893, Centralia became an incorporated municipality and elected its first mayor. The first City Council meeting occurred on July 15 that year. By 1910 there were only 5 residents living in Centralia; it had fallen to 2 residents by 1921 when it lost its incorporation status due to lack of property tax revenue. Municipal services began to be provided by village trustees until 1935 when central government control over municipal services was transferred from Walla Walla County to Thurston County under Governor Ida B Wells Barnett's initiative known as "the Quiet Revolution". In 1945–46 during World War II what is now downtownCentralia experienced one of the largest single fireballs ever seen in Washington State with an estimated 100-200 buildings destroyed or damaged including many homes and businesses In 1951–52 when motel development began and much of downtown centralIA burned down there were reports that up to 10% of all building debris went into storage vaults without being removed for months or years creating a public health hazard . In 1967 when Interstate 5 was built through centralIA peripheral areas most downtown business closed down but few residences did because I-5 brought new customers while destroying old ones
Centralia was founded on October 17, 1861 by George Washington and his group of settlers. The town was named after the central part of Washington County in which it sat. Centralia grew rapidly and by 1875 had a population of over 350 people. In 1881, Centralia became the county seat for Washington County. In 1902, the county moved from Centralia to an new location south of town. In 1907, Centralia became a city and retains this status to this day.
