Centralia was founded on December 3, 1872 by citizens of the town of Centralia and the surrounding area who desired to create a civic center for their community. The first public meeting that led to Centralia's founding occurred on December 3, 1872 when residents of Centralia and surrounding areas gathered to discuss forming a civic organization. Three days later, they voted unanimously to establishCentralia Civic Society with the goal of creating "a nucleus around which all [the] other local organizations might grow." The society's first meeting took place on December 7th in an old schoolhouse located near Center Street and Third Avenue. On January 6th, 1873, Centralia received its charter from the Washington Legislature. At this point in time it had only two buildings - a schoolhouse and a post office - but these were soon replaced by additional construction materials and businesses such as lumberyards and hotels. During its early years CentralIA experienced several name changes including: First National Bank (1876-1879), American Citizens Bank (1881-1882), Arapaho National Forest Land & Credit Company (1902-1904), and finally American Commerce Merchants Association (1920-1922). In 1907 CentralIA became home to what is considered one of America's first commercial airfields when Spokane International Airport opened just east of town on land grant from Ulysses S Grant. This airport would later be renamed Boeing Field after both men served as directors responsible for its development. In 1923 the City Council approved plans for an expressway through centralIA that would connect Bothell with Seattle via Highway 99W; this project resulted in the creation of Interstate 5 within minutes of centralIA. As more people moved into centralIA during World War II there was increased demand for housing due to increased production at Northwest Airlines Flight Maintenance Base located west of town along I-5 south of Bothell. As a resultof this growth Housing Authority Services Incorporated was created in 1947 which began developing homes throughout central IA while also providing services such as trash removal, lawn care, etc.. In 1951 Housing Authority Services merged with Republic Services Corporation becoming one company with responsibility for all aspects relatedto housing %% In 1970 Republic Services Corporation merged with Lennar Corp becoming one company responsible for all aspects relatedto homebuilding %%
